When you visit the Richard Rodgers Theatre in Manhattan, you’ll be stepping through a remarkable doorway. Situated in the midst of bustling New York City, between 8th Avenue and Broadway, the Richard Rodgers Theatre is one of New York’s most beautiful and popular venues. Its loggia-style design is preserved as a historic New York City landmark, with its towering white arches under a marquee entrance.
When it originally opened in 1925, the venue was known as Chanin’s 46th Street Theatre, then just 46th Street Theatre. In 1990 it reopened after refurbishment with a new name, in honor of Richard Rodgers. A 20th century musical phenomenon, Rodgers enjoyed successful partnerships with Lorenz Hart, Oscar Hammerstein II and Stephen Sondheim. He dominated Broadway for over 30 years with his string of 40 hit shows. Rodgers was one of America’s most successful and well-known composers, who published over 900 songs.
2024 will mark the centenary of this famed New York theatre, whose 100 years of musical presentations include some of the biggest show names in history. Guys and Dolls, Chicago, Anything Goes, Damn Yankees and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas – they all played here to packed houses. The Tony Awards organization calls Richard Rodgers Theatre the “house of hits,” as it’s presented the highest number of Tony Award-winning Best Musicals and Best Plays in Broadway history.
Since 2015, the 1,319-seat Richard Rodgers Theatre has been the home of the international smash hit, Hamilton. In 2016, this musical took 11 Tony awards out of a record-breaking 16 nominations, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Choreography, Best Direction and seven more for performers and presentation. Only The Producers has won more Tony awards than Hamilton, and that only by one!
