Making its first appearance in in 2015 and performing for almost 10 years now, Hamilton shook Broadway by storm bringing a revolutionary approach. Based on Ron Chernow’s biographical book about Alexander Hamilton, we learn the story of Alexander Hamilton’s early years and journey to power as one of the Founding Fathers of Northern America. This is a profound story that is both historical and clever, Hamilton is still to this day lauded as revolutionary in its storytelling that has left its mark on politics, culture, and our youth.
It was created by American composer and writer Lin-Manuel Miranda who is also known for his numerous accomplishments in movies, Broadway and more. He went on to compose the music and lyrics for previous Broadway play In the Heights, another Tony award-winning showcase. Miranda is also the creator of music and lyrics in many high profile musical films such as Moana. This hit musical, featuring a ethinically diverse cast, is set to a score that combines new genres like hip hop, jazz, R&B and more, which has made Hamilton all the more revolutionary and exciting by showcasing these music genres to the stage. Showtunes such as “Satisfied”, “Wait For It”, and “You’ll Be Back”, have become loved by many as top-rated memorable songs from the production since its Broadway debut. Lin-Manuel Miranda has attributed his music inspiration for Hamilton to become top rap and hip-hop rappers of USA, he wanted to unite the different genres together in an unprecedented manner! The showtunes of Hamilton is praised heavily by New York critics alike, compared to other Broadway shows that have been staged, Hamilton continues to be more fast-paced and lively than others.
Hamilton has since gone on to achieve a record-breaking 11 Tony Awards and 16 Tony nominations, Grammy Awards, Olivier Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and even a special mention from the Kennedy Center Honors. So far, Hamilton has achieved global acclaim as it continues its limited runs all over the world, including the continents of Europe and Asia.
